Two women have been charged with making unrelated false bomb threats against passenger aircraft departing Los Angeles International Airport since September. Authorities say both cases involved frayed romantic relationships.
In one of the two cases, Lizet Sariol pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a single felony count of conveying false and misleading information, The Associated Press reports.
CBS Los Angeles writes:
The charge stems from an anonymous call Sariol reportedly placed Sept. 25 to a United Airlines call center in Detroit. It is alleged that she said a Frenchman and his friends, all of whom have Arabic surnames, posed an unspecified threat to a plane set to depart that day from Los Angeles International Airport to Las Vegas and then on to Paris, according to court papers.
The man singled out in the bomb threat told authorities he thought Sariol was upset because he broke off a brief sexual relationship with her.
Meanwhile, the US Attorneys Office in Los Angeles has charged another woman – Johnna Woolfolk – with providing false and misleading information after she also allegedly called in a fake bomb threat.
Authorities say Woolfolks call was meant to prevent a Nov. 27 AirTran Airways flight bound for Atlanta from taking off, the Los Angeles Times reports.
In that case, authorities say Woolfolk and her husband were having marital difficulties and she wanted him to put off a business trip to Atlanta so that they could work out their differences, The Daily Breeze of Torrance reports.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller tells the Times that cases like these are not only inconvenient for other passengers, but that they also tie up law-enforcement officials from handling other cases.
The airlines are not tools for revenge, Eimiller says to the Times. Making a threat to an airline is a serious offense and will be prosecuted. The response to these hoaxes is a great expense to the government.
The Daily Breeze says Sariol is scheduled to be sentenced May 7, when she faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, said Assistant US Attorney Ed Alon.
Woolfolk will appear in court on Jan. 9 and is expected to plead guilty, according to the Daily Breeze.
