Mansfield Water Meadows leisure pool closed Monday

MANSFIELD District Council says that due to unforeseen maintenance issues, the leisure pool at Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Centre is closed today (Monday).

Repairs have been carried out, the water is now being reheated and the pool will be open from 12 noon on Tuesday. However, the red and white slides will remain closed until further notice due to a technical fault that the Council is working to fix. The entry price is reduced to £3.40 for adults and £2.20 for children during this time.

The yellow slides and wave machine will still be operating tomorrow and the competition pool, sauna and fitness suite are open as normal today.

Coun Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: “Work to repair leaks was carried out over the weekend but unfortunately the pool must remain closed today while the water reaches the correct temperature. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

For further information on opening times please go to the website www.mansfield.gov.uk/watermeadows or call the complex on 01623 463 880.

Leisure travel strengthens demand rates

  • Transient demand growth continues to be responsible for overall demand growth.
  • Before this downturn in 2008, group and transient demand mirrored each other. From this recent trend, leisure travel has recovered better than business travel in terms of demand.
  • Both group and transient rates reached a plateau in the last half of 2011.

New £9m Victoria Leisure Centre opens

A Nottingham leisure centre, which has undergone a £9m improvement scheme, has opened to the public.

Work to modernise the 100-year-old Victoria Leisure Centre began in 2010.

New facilities include a six-lane, 25m swimming pool, a fully equipped gym and a separate childrens splash area.

Hundreds marched through Nottingham to protest against the possible closure of the building and some original features have been incorporated into the design.

Victoria Leisure Centre was on a list of centres facing possible closure after Nottingham City Council said the facility was too expensive to run and past its best.

Part of the centre, the Danielle Beccan Suite, has been dedicated to the memory of the Nottingham teenager who was the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting in 2004.

Standing next to the leisure centre is the revamped Sneinton Market, which has had a £6.8m transformation.

It is hoped the space will be used for public performances, markets and festivals and is part of the city councils plan to regenerate the area.

Village leisure centre gets go-ahead to triple in size

The Kings Fitness and Leisure Centre in Station Road, Cheddar, will undergo extensive refurbishment in the summer, adding more machines and a new function room for pupils and the public to use.

The centre, operated by the same trust which runs The Kings of Wessex Academy, pulls in gym users from across ?Somerset and North Somerset.

It currently has 30 pieces of equipment such as treadmills but this total will now grow to about 100.

A new multi-purpose function room will also be built for use by groups, fitness classes and parties.

It means there will be enough space and kit for students from the academy to use the facilities in their learning.

Building will begin this summer and finish by September, with the centre staying open while the work is under way.

The new additions will utilise unused space in the centre, so the building itself will remain the same size.

Academy headteacher Chris Richardson said: “This is an exciting project for Cheddar in a special sporting year which sees Great Britain hosting the 2012 Olympics.

“The current facilities are well used by the community, but we are not able to keep pace with growing demand.

“The new facility will enable us to provide more extensive fitness opportunities, as well as opening it up to our own students.

“As well as using the centre for lessons during the academy day, young people aged 13-16 will have opportunity to use the suite after school and at the weekend under the supervision of qualified instructors.”

Fadness: Leisure class same as very rich of today

“The leisure class is in great measure sheltered from the stress of those economic burdens which prevail in any modern highly organized industrial community.” So said Thorstein Veblen way back in 1899 in his book, “The Theory of the Leisure Class.”

“The struggle for the means of life are less exacting for this class than any other, and as a consequence of this privileged position we should expect to find it one of the least responsive of the classes of society to the demands required to remedy a situation.”

The Leisure Class of Veblin’s day is the same as the very rich of today. Their wealth comes from investments and speculations, not manual labor.

Since over half of all members of the US Congress are millionaires, is it any wonder that such problems as fixing the federal budget deficits and the national debt turn into a fight over whether to raise taxes or not? We constantly hear from the “right” that these government programs are running deficits, but their remedy is never to solve these problems by raising taxes.

The GOP “right wing,” — and as Veblin would identify, the “Leisure Class” — have very little interest in increasing taxes (on themselves) to solve the ever-increasing social problems of those classes below them. They (Leisure Class) believe their position in society was gained by their own craft and cunning, forgetting that the American economy, through government involvement, created a climate for the upper class to succeed.

The very rich in their attempt to gain control of the government need the votes of people below their 10 percent of income distribution. People are suspicious of the rich, so the “suits” like to tell of their humble beginnings. Like Romney, they campaign in blue jeans and open-collar shirts to make you believe they are “just like you.”

Your vote means a lot to them. After all, once in, they can protect their way of life to the detriment of yours.

EuroSite Power to provide clean energy at UK leisure centre

EuroSite Power Limited, a leading On–Site Utility, has reached an agreement to supply clean energy to Haverhill Leisure Centre in Suffolk, UK.

Under the terms of the fifteen-year agreement, the Company will install an InVerde 100 combined heat and power (CHP) system at the centre managed by Abbeycroft Leisure, a Charitable Leisure Trust which also operates St Edmundsbury Borough Councils other leisure centre in Bury St Edmunds plus another fitness centre in Ipswich.

The CHP system, providing 100 kW, will be owned and operated by EuroSite Power. The Leisure Trust will receive a discount on the energy produced by the CHP systems and reduce its carbon emissions from the property. The value of the agreement to the Company is £1.5m ($2.37m).

This is a very significant order for EuroSite Power and it prepares us for a very exciting 2012, said Paul Hamblyn, Managing Director of EuroSite Power. Public leisure centres are an important part of our growth strategy, the Company continues to pursue these and other large property holders to accelerate our growth within the UK market.

The specific CHP system planned for the property is expected to reduce the emissions of the leisure centre by 224 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year and because good quality CHP is supported by government, the impact of the Climate Change Levy will be greatly reduced.
